Brazil study: Electrolytes beat water for post-workout recovery

New research confirms that drinking water alone after exercise may not be enough for proper recovery. A review of post-workout nutrition strategies found strong evidence that including electrolytes in a post-exercise routine improves recovery and performance during subsequent workouts.

During exercise, especially in hot or humid conditions, the body can lose more than 4 liters of sweat per hour. Sweat contains not only water but also key electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. These minerals support muscle contraction, nerve function, and fluid balance.

When these minerals are depleted, performance and recovery suffer. Athletes may fatigue earlier and experience a reduced rate of muscle repair. Research shows that starting the next workout in a dehydrated state can impair endurance, increase fatigue, and slow the body’s ability to replenish energy stores and repair muscle tissue.

The review confirms that electrolyte-rich beverages are more effective than water alone at helping the body retain fluids and recover faster. Water has a low Beverage Hydration Index, meaning it is not retained as well in the body after drinking. Plain water lacks minerals like sodium that help fluids stay in the system instead of passing through quickly.

Electrolyte powders offer a targeted approach to rehydration. Many products on the market contain varying doses of key electrolytes. One option provides 350 milligrams of sodium per serving, along with potassium, magnesium, and chloride to support nerves, muscles, heart, and bones. It also contains 3 grams of creatine per serving, which research shows helps build muscle and speed recovery regardless of age or fitness level.

On days with workouts, long walks, or yard work, experts recommend sipping electrolytes with water as soon as possible to replenish lost fluids and minerals. For extended activity, electrolyte powder can be added to a water bottle to sip during the workout. Hydration support remains important even on days without scheduled exercise, and for creatine to work fully, it must be taken daily.
